OPTIMAX DIRECTOR PIONEERS NEW CATARACT TECHNIQUE

Cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery patients are less likely to be troubled by peripheral distortion thanks to a new surgical technique pioneered by Optimax.

Mr Ilango, Optimax Medical Director, who has more than 25 years of experience in refractive lens exchange, believes the issue of negative dysphotopsia can now be significantly reduced by a modification of capsulorrexhis (CCC) which he is pioneering. He told delegates at the 2019 British Society for Refractive Surgery meeting in Birmingham –
“Refractive lens exchange surgery is increasingly popular, particularly amongst those in their 50s and 60s. I estimate that at least 10% experience the post-operative symptoms of negative dysphotopsia which has concerned me for some time. Having considered the physics of the issue I have adjusted my technique with positive outcomes.”

Mr Ilango’s modification technique was applied during surgery involving 50 consecutive patients. They all underwent refractive lens exchange surgery in both eyes, a week apart, at Optimax clinics during 2018. All operations were performed by Mr Ilango and the average age of the patients was 58 years.
“I find only advantages with this technique and it is set to become standard procedure throughout all 22 Optimax clinics, thereby ensuring greater levels of patient satisfaction.”
