MUMSNET RAISES AWARENESS OF CHILDREN’S VISION CARE

Mumsnet users have been quizzed about their understanding of children’s eyecare and the availability of myopia management options.  The research – commissioned by the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, the Optical Suppliers’ Association and the College of Optometrists – revealed the need for greater clarity and direction for parents and carers.

With 9m regular users, Mumsnet is the most significant platform for children’s well-being.  Survey respondents showed that visits to the dentist were 10% more important – in their minds – than vision checks, and that there was much confusion over –

*If regular vision screening takes place at school

*If school screening is as comprehensive as a visit to the opticians

*When children should first visit a practice

*Where the first port of call should be for issues of vision or eye health

*Understanding about myopia management options

The national survey brought BBC TV and national Press coverage, with the advice that children should see an optometrist between the age of 3-4, or earlier if there are concerns.  Parents and carers were reassured that reading ability is not a pre-requisite to having an eye examination.

The research findings are expected to encourage health visitors to raise vision checks with parents and carers of  young children and to highlight the need for myopia awareness.
