OPHTHALMOLOGIST SEEKS PHARMA SUPPORT FOR IODINE DROPS

Povidone iodine as a substitute for antibiotics has been raised again as ophthalmologists look to treat Covid-related eye infections as efficiently as possible. Nick Jacobs, Consultant Ophthalmologist, believes there is a strong case for prescribing this in preference to antibiotics, and is seeking a manufacturing partner.

“Povidone iodine is very topical.  There is a significant history of using this to treat eye infections and it is being used off-label for Covid conjunctivitis. We are all striving to reduce the use of antibiotics and there is a proven route to use this, plus it would be useful as a prophylaxis.  The cost savings are significant and open up opportunities to treat many more patients in Third World countries,” he said.

Nick is interested in getting approval to use Povidone iodine 1.25% in conjunctivitis of all types, not as an antiseptic but an antibiotic.
